Miami Beach, July 15, 1997:
famed designer Gianni Versace is gunned down outside the gates of his Ocean Drive mansion

The opening scene of FX’s Ryan Murphy-helmed “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace” is a visual masterpiece; it plays like an art-piece-style ballet, tailored specifically to the genius fashion icon gone too soon, and a psychological profile of a sociopath on a mission to destroy the man of his obsessions.

The assassination of Gianni Versace was a heartbreaking moment for fashion fans around the world and for Miami locals, who often saw Versace at Ocean Drive hotspot News Cafe, mere steps away from his gilded beachfront mansion, sipping espresso and catching up on the newest fashion magazines.

Miami Beach was a place of respite for Gianni. It was his playground, his escape from the pressures of the fashion world.

Little did Versace know that he was the deluded obsession of murderous sociopath Andrew Cunanan, who had been on a deadly rampage of revenge and murder across the country.

Cunanan had a deadly infatuation with Versace, an obsession that would come to fruition on that fateful summer day in 1997. Walking home from the News Cafe as he was known to do, Gianni arrived at the steps of his famed South Beach estate and met the gun-wielding Cunanan face-to-face.

Shots rang out into the quiet summer morning. It was a meeting whose consequences would reverberate around the world.

The loss of Versace, one of fashion’s most visionary and beloved designers, was felt across the fashion world.

Versace’s designs were daring, bold, and colorful. They were full of life and creativity, like the man himself.

Versace’s runway featured every top ’90s supermodel in the industry. Models lined up for the chance to hit the runway in one of Versace’s custom pieces, including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford.

These are the supermodels who most often graced his runway. Coined “The Big Four,” these models loved Versace and his fashions.
