BLACK SWAN
Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the king of the psychological thriller, Black Swan explores the mind of Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman), a perfectionist member of the New York City Ballet, relegated to background roles and frustrated dreams of becoming a principal dancer with the company. But the tides are turning – creative director Thomas Leroy (played by the standout Vincent Cassel) decides to let go of the aging frustrated prima-ballerina Beth MacIntyre (the brilliant Winona Ryder). The Role of the White/Black Swan in Swan Lake is suddenly up for grabs. What will Nina do, and how far down the rabbit hole will she go in her mind to be perfect? She is fascinated and put by newcomer Lily (Mila Kunis, who is beyond badass in this movie), who challenges Nina to live on the edge instead of playing it safe. The question comes down to this: Can Nina be both the white and black swan while maintaining her sanity? Her delusions, fears, anorexia, and deteriorating mental health give us an idea of the toll it takes to be perfect.
