Iconic MTV Video Music Award Performances

MUSIC

It only stands to reason that the first network devoted to the art of the music video would create an award show all its own. The inaugural MTV Video Music Awards debuted in 1984 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The show was imagined as a rules-free environment where young people could be free, let go, have fun, and watch their favorite musicians perform. The big victory of the night? Winning the coveted Moonman, the award that came to symbolize the best-of-the-best of music videos.

The VMA’s have maintained their stronghold in pop culture history. From Madonna to Michael Jackson to Britney Spears, only the most epic performers have been invited to grace the stage. The VMA’s represent youth, fun, invention, and, most importantly, unforgettable performances!

Here is our list of the most iconic VMA performances to date – we don’t know about you guys, but we want our MTV!

MADONNA: LIKE A VIRGIN (1984)

Madonna was the very first artist in history to grace the VMA stage. The news of her controversial wedding-themed performance of “Like A Virgin” spread like wildfire in the conservative, yuppie Reagan years that was the 80s. Her performance goes down in the books as the most exciting performance in VMA history. Donning a skimpy lace-bustier wedding dress and gyrating on a giant wedding cake, Madonna proved that she came to play. Her act helped the VMAs become a household name. Madonna is known for her expressive performances, and this one is certainly key to her legacy as the Queen of Pop.

MADONNA: VOGUE (1990)

Madonna ruled the MTV kingdom once again in 1990 when she returned to the VMA stage for a highly dramatic/Marie Antionette-esque, costume-heavy rendition of her hit song “Vogue.” This performance was so well-received that it continues to generate interest today. Not too shabby for a performance that took place 35 years ago. It just goes to show: Iconic is Iconic. There is no expiration date on brilliance.

MICHAEL JACKSON: MEDLEY (1995)

Michael Jackson’s 1995 VMA performance was a legendary medley that showcased his unparalleled talent and charisma. Opening with “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” he immediately captured the audience’s attention with his signature dance moves and magnetic energy. The performance seamlessly transitioned through hits like “The Way You Make Me Feel” and “Scream,” each segment filled with dynamic choreography and spectacular visual effects. He also delivered a powerful rendition of “Black or White,” culminating in a stunning finale that included a memorable, iconic moonwalk. The performance not only celebrated his extensive catalog of hits but also reinforced his status as the King of Pop.

BRITNEY SPEARS: I’M A SLAVE 4 YOU (2001)

MTV VMA’S VIA YOUTUBE

When Britney Spears wrapped a python around her neck, VMA viewers around the world celebrated in unison. Britney had come a long way to transform herself from a teen pop tart into Britney 2.0, a more adult, take-no-bs kind of Britney. Discarding the pigtailed hair and school girl’s uniform of days past, Spears used this 2001 VMA occasion to remind the world that she was not a girl, but a woman. It’s Britney, Bitch.

BEYONCE´: CRAZY IN LOVE/BABY BOY (2003)

Marking Beyoncé’s debut VMA performance as a solo artist (independent of her popular girl group Destiny’s Child), this dynamic performance was iconic because it introduced the world to the force that is Beyoncé. She opened with her smash hit song “Crazy in Love,” immediately energizing the audience with her dance moves and powerful vocals. The performance seamlessly transitioned into “Baby Boy,” highlighting her collaboration with rapper Sean Paul, which brought a sultry and rhythmic vibe to the stage. Beyoncé’s exceptional choreography, combined with her commanding stage presence and remarkable vocal prowess, made this performance a standout moment, celebrating her introduction to the world as an artist in her own right. Little did we know at the time how influential she would become.

MADONNA FT. BRITNEY SPEARS, CHRISTINA AGUILERA & MISSY ELLIOTT: LIKE A VIRGIN/HOLLYWOOD (2003)

…And then they kissed. On the heels of the heavily publicized early-aughts Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake breakup drama, Madonna invited both Britney and singer Christina Aguilera onstage to deliver their own renditions of her iconic 1984 VMA performance of “Like A Virgin.” The ladies performed in barely-there bridal ensembles and gyrated on top of an oversized wedding cake – just like their predecessor did all of those years before. Transitioning into her song “Hollywood,” Madonna takes the stage and dances closely with her pop princesses. And then, in typical Madonna fashion, IT happened: the now-infamous kiss between Madonna and Britney. If anybody knows how to generate buzz, Bitch it’s Madonna.

JANET JACKSON: TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL JACKSON (2009)

Eminem and Rihanna joined forces back in 2010 to record the hit song “Love The Way You Lie,” a number that addresses the toxic nature of abusive relationships. Rihanna, on set shooting a film, initially declined to perform at the VMAs, but, I guess she will do anything for her friend and collaborator Eminem. Rihanna arrived right on time and the crowd went wild for her cherry-red hair, white dress, and combat boots ensemble. Huge Win!

The newly-minted “voice” of her generation, Grande follows in the footsteps of the late, great Whitney Houston when it comes to singing talent. MILEY CYRUS: WE CANT STOP (2013)

MTV VMA’S VIA YOUTUBE

When Miley Cyrus took the VMA stage in 2013 wearing a teddy bear onesie and twerking on stage, the world collectively gasped. The significance? Forever gone was the good girl Disney Miley who had made way for the wild-child version of herself by rejecting her squeaky clean image, all for the world to see. The world was certainly shocked by this performance and somewhat concerned about her well-being, but it was just Miley acting out like the teenager she was. Since then she has grown into a successful, dynamic artist in her own right. She still has her wild persona but what can we say? She’s just being Miley. She is nothing if not true to herself.

LADY GAGA FT. ARIANA GRANDE: MEDLEY (2020)

MTV VMA’S VIA VEVO/YOUTUBE

Perhaps the most significant element of Lady Gaga’s 2020 VMA performance was the timing. When the coronavirus began to hit the U.S. hard in March 2020, people scrambled to figure out if this was the end of times. Living through the first pandemic in modern history, the entire world was frozen in fear. When the VMAs rolled around at the end of summer, we were already living in a different world. In this performance, Lady Gaga faced COVID head-on by combining mask-wearing with a futuristic, fashionable twist. Gaga and her featured performer, Ariana Grande, adhered to the safety protocols of pandemic life, wearing masks while embracing fashion. Since no guests were allowed to attend the 2020 awards, the duo performed their set in front of the cameras only. Gaga and Grande entertained us during the worst health crises in modern times. This performance will always be iconic because of it.
